Another big name added to Bok injury list

NEWS: One of South Africa's top loose forwards will be in a race against time to be fit for the Springboks' internationals against Ireland and Portugal in July.

On Friday, Japanese club the Blue Revs revealed that their captain Kwagga Smith suffered an "adductor longus tendon rupture" in a match against Sungoliath on January 13.

Smith's club believes the estimated period of recovery will be approximately five months.

The 30-year-old played off the bench in the Boks 12-11 win over the All Blacks in October's World Cup Final. He was also part of the Bok team that won the World Cup in Japan in 2019.

He is the latest Bok World Cup winner to be added to a growing injury list.

Faf de Klerk (knee) and Jesse Kriel (broken thumb) both went under the knife after picking up injuries in Japan.

Other Boks that recently underwent surgery after the World Cup include Bongi Mbonambi (knee), RG Snyman (chest/shoulder) and Jean Kleyn (knee).

Vincent Koch has also been out since the World Cup with a knee injury.

Mbonambi and Koch are expected to return to action for the Sharks soon.
