Namibia meets the Jaguars
Namibia meet the Jaguars in Buenos Aires on Friday, 8 May 2009 at 21.00 at Club Atlético San Isidro.
For Namibia this two-match tour is important as they hope to build a team for the Confederation of African Rugby matches which lead to the World Cup. After being at the last three World Cups, the Biltongboere would like to go again. The immediate stumbling blocks for the Namibians would be Côte d’Ivoire, Uganda and Kenya.
The Jaguars are an Argentinian selection but not by any means the full Pumas side and are in effect Argentina A.
Earlier this year Namibia turned down invitations to Russia and Scotland because the players were not fit enough.
The 18 players that have gone to Argentina are not all first-choice players. Those playing top rugby in South Africa were not available. The team is coached by John Williams with assistants Johan Diergaardt and Hakkies Husselman.
The IRB suggested the tour to Namibia on 25 March and it was first okayed by the Argentinian union on 14 April. The IRB is paying the air tickets, Namibia the daily allowance, outfitting and insurance, Argentina the accommodation and meals.
