Player ratings: No puff

It was obvious the Fijians struggled to back up their showing against England in last Friday's World Cup opener.

While they still have a chance of an upset and a couple of wins along the way, their World Cup play-off dream has evaporated.

Jan de Koning rates the Fijian players!

15 Metuisela Talebula:

Was a real threat with ball in hand, but on defence he let his team down.

6/10

14 Waisea Nayacalevu:

Was injured and replaced inside five minutes. Not enough time to be rated.

13 Vereniki Goneva:

May have been well-marked by the Australian defence, but still found some space and made all his tackles.

7/10

12 Gabiriele Lovobalavu:

Did well with limited time and space, was solid on defence and turned over just one ball.

6/10

11 Nemani Nadolo:

Guilty of far too many ugly head-high tackles and dangerous high sling-shot type tackles early on - a very nasty streak in his game. Those apologies appeared fake as he didn't stop after the first transgressions.

4/10

10 Ben Volavola:

Defence may not be his forte, but was the player that gave Fiji direction and proved to be a menace to the Australian defence.

8/10

9 Nikola Matawalu:

His service was acceptable, made a couple of half-breaks and did the basics well.

6/10

8 Netani Talei:

Worked very hard on defence, slipped a couple of tackles, carried the ball well and conceded just one penalty.

6/10

7 Akapusi Qera (captain):

Slipped far too many tackles as a captain, even though he did work hard on defence. His ball carries were also not that affective.

5/10

6 Peceli Yato:

Was his team's most effective ball carrier, made plenty of tackles and worked hard off the ball.

7/10

5 Leone Nakarawa:

Often made metres with ball in hand and was a rock on defence.

7/10

4 Tevita Cavubati:

Not the most energetic player around, although he did the basics well.

5/10

3 Manasa Saulo:

Was lucky not to have been sin-binned for repeated infringements and also missed too many tackles in a stay that lasted just 35 minutes.

3/10

2 Tuapati Talemaitoga:

Was solid, rather than spectacular.

6/10

1 Campese Ma’afu:

Cost his team dearly with a silly yellow card late in the first half. And that was not his only transgression of the match.

3/10

Replacement:

16 Viliame Veikoso:

Not used.

17 Peni Ravai (on for Yato, 35th min):

He was not meant to play that long and made no real impact.

5/10

18 Isei Colati (on for Saulo, 78th min):

Not enough time to be rated.

19 Nemia Soqeta (on for Cavubati, 61st min):

Another of the replacements that made no impact.

4/10

20 Malakai Ravulo (on for Talei, 67th min):

Not enough time to be rated.

21 Nemia Kenatale (on for Matawalu, 49th min):

Was basically just a link, but did his job.

5/10

22 Joshua Matavesi:

Not used.

23 Aseli Tikoirotuma (on for Nayacalevu, 5th min):

Showed what a threat he can be with enough game time.

6/10
