Player Ratings: Progress made
The Wallabies picked up where they left off from the opening round encounter to take a 17-0 lead early in the contest. However, things started going pear-shaped as they allowed the All Blacks back into the game and saw their lead trimmed to 17-14 at the half-time interval.
They saw their lead became a deficit early in the second half before the lead exchanged hands on numerous occasions. It seemed as though they bagged the unlikely victory in the 76th minute but failed to maintain that lead as they saw the victory slip out of their hands.
Tauriq Ebrahim rates the Wallabies!
15 Israel Folau
Absolutely dangerous with ball in hand and proved how much of a threat he is with each carry. Special mention for his interception that got the scoring going.
9/10
14 Dane Haylett-Petty
Stuck a few crucial tackles to stop Ioane's momentum but attacking chances were minimal.
6/10
13 Tevita Kuridrani
Limited chances to run the ball but when he did, he broke the advantage line. Questions will be asked about his defensive work though.
6/10
12 Kurtley Beale
Looked to get himself involved to spark his backline but his usual attacking threat was thwarted for most parts of the game. However, when he sparked, he looked dangerous.
6/10
11 Henry Speight
Saw little of the ball and could not make the impact he would have wanted.
5/10
10 Bernard Foley
Took the game to the opposition and while his overall performance was good, he let himself down with dreadful goal kicking that ultimately cost his team the match.
3/10
9 Will Genia
A masterclass performance by the experienced campaigner as he dictated matters with near-perfect passing.
9/10
8 Sean McMahon
His work rate on defence set the tone for the team to follow while his carries got his side onto the front foot.
7/10
7 Michael Hooper (captain)
Remains the Wallabies' breakdown terrier and showed determination to grab a try, however, he slipped too many tackles at crucial times.
6/10
6 Ned Hanigan
The young loosie put his body on the line with each tackle he made as he stopped the All Blacks in their tracks.
7/10
5 Rory Arnold
The big lock never really got going as he was overshadowed by his opposite number.
4/10
4 Rob Simmons
Had a tough day at the office and while he stuck plenty of tackles, he slipped quite a few too.
4/10
3 Allan Alaalatoa
Endured a torrid time in the scrums and his general play failed to make a positive contribution.
4/10
2 Stephen Moore
Always on the back foot at scrum time and got replaced towards the end of the first half.
4/10
1 Scott Sio
The usually solid scrummager will not be happy after being shoved but he made up for it with some strong carries.
5/10
Replacements:
16 Tatafu Polota-Nau (on for Moore, 39th min)
Worked hard on defence but let a few tackles slip through his hands.
5/10
17 Tom Robertson (on for Sio, 64th min)
Had one decent run but was forced into a more defensive outing. He stood up to this task quite well.
6/10
18 Sekope Kepu (on for Alaalatoa, 41st min)
His presence stabilised the scrums and he too was forced to do more tackling than attacking.
6/10
19 Izack Rodda (on for Arnold, 65th min)
His only touch of the ball got him some metres and stood up well to the defensive challenge.
6/10
20 Lopeti Timani (on for Hanigan, 63rd min)
Stuck the few tackles he was asked to make but did little else to catch the eye.
4/10
21 Nick Phipps
Not used.
22 Reece Hodge (on for Haylett-Petty, 63rd min)
His only contribution came on defence as he hung on to all his tackles.
5/10
23 Curtis Rona
Not used.
