Eddie Jones resigns as Wallabies coach
NEWS: Eddie Jones has reportedly resigned as Wallabies coach following a very controversial second stint.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Jones and Rugby Australia are set to part ways after a dismal World Cup campaign, where the Wallabies were knocked out in the group stages for the first time in history.
Jones returned to Australia earlier this year, taking over from Dave Rennie.
The 63-year-old signed a five-year contract, that ran until 2027.
Part of Jones’s long-term pitch has been the need to blood new talent ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour in 2025, and the home World Cup two years after that.
However, earlier this month reports emerged that Jones had been secretly interviewing for the head coach role in Japan.
Jones has warm relationships with key powerbrokers at the top of Japanese rugby, having previously coached the Brave Blossoms between 2012 and 2015.
The former England head coach denied he has taken part or will sit in an interview with the JRFU.
And while his future plans remain unknown, the Herald reported on Sunday, that Jones and RA have been locked in discussions over recent days about an exit for the under-fire coach.
There is final paperwork to be signed but Jones’ future as Wallabies boss is over.
The Wallabies won two of nine Tests under Jones this year.
