Northampton fullback Ben Foden's chances of an international comeback were dealt a cruel blow with confirmation that he is set to miss the rest of the season.

Foden out for seasonIt was revealed that he had suffering a ligament rupture in his left leg.

Foden went off early during Northampton's European Champions Cup victory over the Ospreys in Swansea last weekend and scans have since revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg.

In a statement, the club said: "Northampton Saints fullback Ben Foden is set to miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury sustained in the club's Champions Cup win at Ospreys.

"Foden left the field in the 12th minute at Liberty Stadium, and subsequent scans revealed a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in his left leg.

"The 29-year-old will now undergo surgery with a view to rehabilitating for the start of the 2015/16 season."

Northampton are also currently without England lock Courtney Lawes following an ankle injury, with coach Jim Mallinder having already stated the second row will miss the "first few weeks" of this season's Six Nations which starts on February 6.
