World Schools Festival at Paul Roos - Fixtures
The World Schools Rugby Festival is taking place at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch at the end of March 2019.
This is the second edition after the one hosted by Paarl Boys' High in 2018. The 2018 edition was a part of Boys' High's 150th birthday celebrations.
Paul Roos is also an old and famous school, founded in 1866 in Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town.
Participants
From South Africa: Grey College of Bloemfontein, Glenwood of Durban,, Paarl Gim, Monument of Krugersdorp, Affies of Pretoria, SACS of Newlands in Cape Town which is South Africa's oldest school, Boland Landbou of Paarl, Hilton College of the Midlands of KwaZulu Natal and hosts Paul Roos.
From New Zealand: John McGlashan College of Dunedin, Southland Boys' High of Invercargill, Christchurch Boys' High and Napier Boys' High - three from the South Island which South Islanders enjoy calling the Mainland and one, Napier, from North Island
From England: Hartpury College of Gloucester.
Combined teams: Africa Pacific Dragons Select XV, Italian All Stars, South African Invitation XV, USA Schools XV, World Schools Select XV, Zambezi Steelers. The World Schools side replaces the New South Wales Cavaliers who withdrew.
Schools back from 2018 are Affies, Boland Landbou, Glenwood, Grey College, Hilton, Monument and Paarl Gim of South Africa, Christchurch Boys, Hartpury College and Napier Boys.
In the Top 20 Rankings at the end of 2018, Grey, Paul Roos, Glenwood and Paarl Gim were ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Monument were 8th, Affies 13th and Boland Landbou 14th. They clearly are powerful sides.
The Dragons were at last year's festival with players from South Africa, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and Dubai. This year they will have players from New Zealand rugby schools Kelston Boys' High and Wesley College of Auckland and Hastings Boys' High who came second in the 2018 Sanix World Youth Tournament.
The Italian All Stars were at the festival, drawn from Rovigo, Petrarca and Valsugana Emilia. The USA team was chosen from the Rhino Rugby School of Irvine and St Ignatius High School of Cleveland.
In the matches on each day, the South African teams will play against overseas teams. The results will be recorded to see who won, South Africa or Overseas. In 2018, South Africa won.
