Kiwi Tulou eyes French spot

New Zealand forward Alex Tulou has extended his contract with Top 14 club Montpellier until 2017.


The Samoan-born New Zealander, who can play at No.8 or flank, joined Montpellier during the 2010-11 season from Bourgoin and has now scored 20 tries in 81 matches for the top flight club.


France head coach Philippe Saint-Andre approached the 27-year-old in 2013 as one of 10 potential foreigners who could integrate into the French national set-up.


Tulou, who has played once for New Zealand's Sevens team, is in the process of applying for a French passport and is excited by the idea of changing nationalities.


"With the new rules, things have become a bit complicated, but it is still my goal to one day wear the French shirt," said Tulou.


"France has given me the chance for a new life and I have adapted well here." he added.


Montpellier are currently third in the Top 14 standings, five points behind leaders Clermont after six matches.
