New twist in the Kolbe transfer saga

NEWS: Top 14 clubs Toulon and Toulouse have both been sanctioned over breaching the Top 14’s salary cap with Cheslin Kolbe’s transfer in 2021.

According to various French media reports, Toulouse and Toulon received financial penalties on Tuesday following a hearing on October 9 relating to Kolbe’s transfer between the two clubs.

The Springbok signed a lucrative deal with Toulon from Toulouse in August 2021 for a reported contract buyout fee of €1.8 million (ZAR36,9 million).

Kolbe still had two years to run on his contract with the five-time European champions Toulouse.

Midi Olympique’s RugbyRama reported that France rugby’s disciplinary committee specialising in the salary cap investigated potential breaches in the transfer and found both clubs guilty.

Toulouse have been fined €50,000 (ZAR1 million) “for failure to comply with the general obligation of transparency and cooperation” while Toulon were sanctioned with a €70, 000 (ZAR1,4 million) fine “for failure to comply with the general obligation of transparency and cooperation”.

Both clubs have seven days to appeal.
