Hansen's right-hand man wants All Blacks top job

NEWS: Ian Foster has officially joined the race to become the All Blacks' next head coach.

Speaking to media in Auckland on Wednesday, Foster said he was keen to take the next step with the All Blacks after nearly eight seasons as an assistant coach under Steve Hansen.

The All Blacks are currently preparing for the opening rounds of this year's Rugby Championship and Foster made his intentions clear while looking ahead to the international season.

"I'm very excited," said Foster when asked about the challenges ahead, this year and possibly next.

"We've been waiting a long time. World Cups are special and the chance to be involved in another, it's an amazing experience and a privilege to do that.

"If you're asking me what happens after that, then we'll have to wait and see. I'm absolutely committed to this team. This is my eighth season, and I'm keen to carry on.

"I'm excited about an opportunity to put my name in the ring as a head coach – but that's the future.

"There's seven-eight years' experience that's culminating in this second World Cup and that's my primary focus. I just can't wait to get into it."

When pushed further about the head coaching job, Foster responded: "I guess we all do that when they advertise the job and there's an interview process. I think I might have just told you though."

The All Blacks open their Rugby Championship campaign against Argentina in Buenos Aires on July 20.
