Weepu gets a six-month verdict

The full extent of scrumhalf Piri Weepu's horrific ankle injury has been revealed by the All Blacks coaches, after he was ruled out of New Zealand's end-of-year tour of Hong Kong and Europe.

Weepu has been diagnosed with a fracture dislocation of the right ankle, after going down awkwardly in a tackle playing for Wellington in NPC action at the weekend.

The utility back, who plays flyhalf for the Wellington Lions and scrumhalf for New Zealand, has been ruled out for six months.

All Blacks coach Graham Henry said the injury was a shame, because Weepu - a quality player this season for his country - was a definite in the New Zealand touring squad.

In Weepu's absence, Alby Mathewson (who is uncapped), Andy Ellis and Jimmy Cowan will be the three scrumhalves on the All Blacks' year-end tour.
