Strauss will keep captaincy

South Africa clinched the three-Test series against Ireland 2-1 on Saturday after edging their opponents 19-13 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday

After the victory, head coach Allister Coetzee backed Strauss to lead the team in the Rugby Championship and on the end-of-year tour.

"He is already appointed for the year, so he is staying on as captain," Coetzee told reporters after the match.

"I am really proud of Adriaan and his leadership."

The Springboks put in massive defensive effort in the finals minutes of the game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium to keep the Irish out and hold on for victory in front of their home fans.

Strauss praised his teammates for the character they showed to secure the win.

"The guys showed a lot of character, especially in the last couple of minutes," said Strauss.

"The Irish were still in the game - it was a win or lose situation and the guys defended for their lives. I am very proud of them."
