Another salary shocker for SA Rugby
BREAKING NEWS: South African Rugby was dealt another body blow on Friday, with news that a group of players will not receive salaries for July.
The players' union, MyPlayers, confirmed that they have been notified by the Falcons Rugby Union that they are not in a financial position to pay players their salaries for July.
"On Friday morning, we had an online meeting with the Falcons players to inform them of this unfortunate turn of events," Eugene Henning, CEO of MyPlayers, said.
"The meeting was also attended by Ettienne de Lange, CEO of the Falcons Rugby Union and representative of the company.
"Though it is very late in the day and month to announce such far-reaching decisions, we regard Ettienne's contributions as constructive and informative.
"Players were also afforded the opportunity to voice their immediate and future concerns."
The latest development is likely to raise questions about the possibility that the Falcons could join the growing number of South African teams going into liquidation.
The Border Rugby Union is bankrupt and SA Rugby also put the Southern Kings into administration recently.
The cash crunch at the East Rand-based union comes as a result of the cancellation of the 2020 Global Rapid Rugby season.
Competing as the Malaysia Valke, based in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, the team used the Rapid Rugby tournament - funded by Australian billionaire Andrew Forrest - as their main source of income.
However, since the Perth-based venture was canned in April, there has been no income for the East Rand-based Falcons.
