New twist in Jurie Roux saga
UPDATE: The protracted Jurie Roux saga has taken another twist, with confirmation that he is hoping to appeal a recent ruling that went against him.
Last month Western Cape High Court judge Vincent Saldanha ruled against Roux in an appeal hearing.
It all relates to the 52-year-old Roux’s long-standing legal battle with his former employer, the University of Stellenbosch.
Roux's lawyer Frikkie Erasmus confirmed to @rugby365com that they are planning an appeal.
"The process is to first apply to the judge for leave to appeal his judgment," Erasmus said of last month's ruling.
"The application has already been submitted, but there is no date set when it will be heard."
Although Erasmus did not want to elaborate any further, it has previously been reported that there is the possibility of taking the matter to The Supreme Court of Appeals or the Constitutional Court.
On December 31 Roux ‘stepped down’ from his role as SARU CEO – a position he held since 2012.
The decision to step down followed Roux’s long-standing legal battle with his former employer, the University of Stellenbosch.
Roux, in December 2021, lost his appeal and was ordered to personally pay back more than ZAR37-million to the University of Stellenbosch.
Roux was ordered to repay the huge sum of money – which an arbitrator found he had misappropriated from Stellenbosch University, between 2002 and 2010.
The audit firm KPMG submitted a preliminary report to the university in 2013, which found that Roux had manipulated the finance system to channel millions of unbudgeted expenditures into the rugby club.
Roux held senior positions in the university’s finance department and had been accused of manipulating the electronic accounting system.
