Thorn: Reds' 40-year-old bolter?
The 40-year-old last played when he was part of the Leicester Tigers' squad in the 2015/15 English season, which concluded in May. He is currently the Reds' elite development squad forwards coach.
However, Thorn said there is a possibility of playing again if things go pear-shaped in terms of injuries.
"If things got dire straits I am happy to help out in any way I can, but I think things are under control at the moment and I got my role that I am doing here," said Thorn.
"There is always an urge. I said I didn’t actually retire, I am just playing worse now. At the moment I am just focussed on my coaching role here and working with the young developing players coming through.
"I am really enjoying that role the last couple of weeks I have been here."
"It's nice to be back. It's been eight years and I am finally back home with the Thorn family so it's really nice - enjoying the blue sky and the warm weather.
"I appreciate the Reds and I like to consider Brisbane my home city, so I feel lucky to be involved and my goal is to contribute where I can," Thorn added.
Thorn also believes he has the necessary experience in coaching to successfully assist the Reds.
"I did a little bit of coaching when I was in Japan. When I was at the Highlanders I was the strength coach as well as a player. For me this is just another step with it and having a bit more of a taste for it with these young guys and seeing if I can contribute well.
"I pride myself on what I do on the field and what I do off it."
