SA refs panels for 2010

South Afriucan referees made known today its panels of referees for 2010 following its recent meetings in Johannesburg. Jonathan Kaplan remains the top-ranked referee in South Africa.

There have been shifts here and there, and the National Panel, reduced last year from 16 to 12, has been further reduced to 11. Willie Roos and Phillip Bosch are no longer on the panel and lust Lourens van der Merwe, the Grey College schoolmaster, has come up from the Provincial Panel.

The referee who has made the most progress on the National Panel is Jason Jaftha of South Western Districts who had an excellent match when he refereed the Under-21 Final at Loftus Versfeld.

The referee to make the most progress on the Provincial Panel is the Waterkloof schoolmaster, Ben Crouse who has gone from 10th to 1st. His father was also a provincial referee. Ben Crouse is a reserve for the National Panel.

New on the provincial panel are Quinton Immelman, whose father was a provincial referee, Pieter de Villiers, Rasta Rashivenga, François Groenewald and Lusanda Jam.

The panel of referees for the Varsity Cup is taken from the National Panel - Ben Crouse, Archie Sehlako, Mlungiseli Mdashe, Matt Kemp, Tiaan Jonker, François Veldsman, Bongani Maloni and Luke Burger with Dilbert November in reserve.

Of the Contenders Squad Sewes Terblanche is a reserve for the Provincial Panel.

Of the specialised assistant referees' panel,, Cobus Wessels is on the IRB's panel and Reuben Rossouw has been proposed for it. Phillip Bosch is new on that panel, swapping the whistle for the flag.
