COVID-19 claims another game

BREAKING NEWS: The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another game in South Africa.

The Currie Cup fourth round match between Griquas and the Bulls, scheduled for Kimberley on Saturday, has been cancelled in line with COVID-19 protocols.

The decision was taken on Thursday after players and management from the Bulls returned positive tests for COVID-19 this week.

As a result of the cancellation of the match, the encounter will be declared a draw and the teams will each receive two log points.

The other two Currie Cup matches scheduled for this weekend between the Pumas and Cheetahs in Nelspruit on Friday and the Lions versus the Sharks in Durban on Saturday are unaffected.

It means the Bulls - the only team till now not to have had a match cancelled - will be under pressure to retain top spot.

The draw takes them up to 35 points, although they may come to rue the loss of a possible three additional points.

It will allow either the Lions (currently on 25 points) and the Sharks (28) to close the gaps on them.

The Lions host the Sharks at Ellis Park at the weekend.

Western Province, in third place on 26 points, has a bye.
