'Great signing': Lions get a much-needed transfer boost

TRANSFER NEWS: Lions confirmed that utility back Gianni Lombard has returned to the Johannesburg franchise.

Lombard joined the Lions in 2018 from the Western Province.

However, 24-year-old opted to sign for the Japanese club the Red Hurricanes last year along with former Lions teammate Elton Jantjies.

Lombard's exit from Johannesburg saw him join former Lions boss Johan Ackermann, who became Hurricanes head coach of the club in 2020.

The back's return is certainly good news for the Lions, who have been struggling to hold on to their big-name players.

Born in Worcester, Lombard previously played for the South African Under 20 in 2017.

On Tuesday the Lions confirmed that utility back Stean Pienaar resigned to the Pride.

Pienaar has extended his stay at Ellis Park till June 2024.

The Lions recently signed Sanele Nohamba (a Springbok training squad member) from the Sharks, while they also resigned the likes of Morne van den Berg, Jordan Hendrikse, Ruben Schoeman, Sibusiso Sangweni and Jaco Visagie.

Meanwhile, Lions fans took to Twitter to express their delight.
