Craven Week invades Kearsney
Kearsney College of Botha's Hill, not far up the climb from Durban on the road to Pietermaritzburg, is brave and will be hosting both the Craven Week and the Academy Week this year and in the same week.
Danie Craven, the greatest of rugby men, after whom the week is named when it started in 1964, wanted the week to be a festival of rugby when the game and not the score mattered. For this reason he objected to the choice of an SA Schools team which happened first in 1974 and still happens. And the scouts from the various unions will be looking for players to engage, though most of this these days starts at the Grant Khomo Week, if not earlier. Craven would not have liked all the competitiveness.
It may well be a happier week if the players concentrated on what they were going to give rather than what they were about to receive. After all a lot of rugby starts with passing.
The main match on the first day will be between KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Province. Eastern Province also played in the last Craven Week main match, in 2015 when they suffered greatly at the hands of Western Province.
That Western Province team was highly successful and they have back in their side four players who were not only at Craven Week last year but were also chosen for South African Schools - lock Salmaan Moerat, who is this year's captain, flyhalf Damian Willemse, centre Manny Rass and eighthman Khanya Ncusane.
The five matches are broadcast live each day on Supersport's channels CSN and 201.
Fixtures
These are the fixtures for the first two days. The matches for Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday will depend on what went before.
All matches will be played on Kearsney's Stott Field.
