Affies are Cocks of the North
Match Report
Affies beat Waterkloof 17-7 in the final of the Beeld Trophy, played at Waterkloof on Saturday.
Affies also beat Klofies in the Under-16 (16-12) and Under-15 (10-7) finals while Nelspruit beat Affies 10-8 in the Under-14 final.
Hans van Vreden of Beeld reports that the Affies 1st XV victory was convincing. It was the four match between the two schools and ended with two victories each.
Van Vreden reports that the early match as a seesaw contest for possession as the two sides got stuck into each other. Gradually, as Waterkloof battled in the line-outs, Affies got more and more possession. This had the knock-on effect of more possession at the breakdown.
Affies' defence was watertight and they made telling use of counterattack opportunities.
Affies were the first to score a try when centre Morné Fraser broke around the blind and scored. And then just before half-time scrumhalf Danie Faasen scored a simply try next to the posts. The half-time score was 12-0.
Affies applied the pressure in the second half and speedster Daandré Erasmus scored a magnificent try to make the score 17-0.
Waterkloof fought back and actually had territorial advantage and eventually SA Schools centre Stefan Watermeyer got through to score under the posts.
In 2005 Waterkloof also lost in the final.
The format of the Beeld Trophy is due to change from now on.
