Affies Break Records

SCHOOL REPORT: In a Premier Interschools match in Pretoria on Saturday, a lovely Highveld winter's day, Affies beat visiting Maritzburg College 78-16, by far the highest score and biggest victory in matches between the two schools since 1996.

In previous matches, Affies had scored over 50 points five times but their previous highest score was 59, their biggest victory 52 points.

This win did not flatter Affies as they were far better than their opponents in every aspect of rugby football, and they ended scoring 12 tries to two.

College were not helped by several injuries, four in the first half alone.

At half-time Affies led 28-11 with tries by Reinhardt Ludwig, two by Gerrard Botha and a penalty try to a try by College's first replacement. After Ludwig's try, College got one. Philani Simamane, in his second year in the 1st XV, went off after a head knock and was replaced by Marcelle Masvikeni who went onto the right wing and did remarkably well to force his way over in the right corner after College had won a lineout on the far left.

Affies' inside centre Gerrard Botha scored two tries, one when he picked up the ball at a tackle and darted over and the other from a scissors with JP Wentzel.

Affies had kickable penalties in the half but preferred to look for tries. Initially, College did in like manner but then opted for penalty kicks at goal.

Affies' fourth try was a penalty try for a collapsed maul at the College line, and the subsequent yellow card hit College hard as Affies racked up the points, scoring 50 in the second half to a try by Brannan Webster when three penalties set College on the attack and he picked up a rolling pass and got over.

Botha scored the first try of the second half to complete his hat-trick and the last try belonged to flank Brendhan Kelbrick who intercepted a pass and ran down to the posts to end the match.
