Affies carry on winning

Match Report

The Affies first rugby team is alive and well, and once again has bragging rights in Pretoria. This they achieved by beating the much-vaunted Waterkloof side by 28-24 at Affies on Saturday.

This win also proved that the glorious victory over Grey College the previous week was no fluke.

The Affies victory can be ascribed to another marvellous team effort, with their pack of forwards giving Waterkloof a lot to think about.

The only points in the first half came from the kicking boots of respectively Gerhard van den Heever (fullback) for the hosts and Stefan Watermeyer (centre) for Klofies. The two teams went into half-time 9-all. Affies would have been the happier side at this stage though, as they made most of the running in the first thirty minutes.

Affies stamped their authority on the game in the second half and raced into a 21-12 lead through tries from Van den Heever and prop Frik Kirsten. The move which saw the classy fullback go over in the corner gave the Affies faithful much to cheer about. At this stage of the match the Affies pack was dominating and victory loomed.

It was then that Waterkloof struck back and scored two fine tries through wings Wynand Willis and Aubrey MacDonald to go into the lead by 24-21.

Affies refused to let this one go, however, and flyhalf Neill Jacobs capped a fine performance to go over next to the Klofie posts. Van den Heever converted to give Affies a clean sweep of 18 straight victories on the day.

Jacobs and his identical twin brother, Ruan (centre) will feel especially proud of their performances on the day. Neill was a thorn in the Waterkloof flesh with his sniping breaks, while Ruan came off best in his duel with SA Schools’ centre, Stefan Watermeyer.
