Augsburg avenge Landboudal

In the second  Classic Clash of the weekend, played in KwaZulu-Natal, Weston hosted Treverton in a match that goes back at least 30 years.

While Augsburg got their revenge over Landboudal, Weston continued to build on their unbeaten record against Treverton.

Augsburg 16-12 Landboudal

Having won the 2015 Classic Clash comfortably, Landboudal anticipated another victory over their rivals, however this year the hosts came well prepared for the fixture.

The game kicked off with war cries from both schools creating a great atmosphere. But it was not long before the rivalry on the field made its presence felt.

The referee had his worked cut out for him, with a total amount of eight penalties awarded in the first stanza and it was clear that this match was always going to be highly contested.

With three successive converted penalties, Augsburg headed into the tunnel with a lead 9-0 after a highly physical and bruising first half.

After conceding nine points, the visitors started the second half rejuvenated and ready to take on Augsburg's defence.

The home side's defence eventually folded and the first try of the match was scored by Hennie Marais, narrowing the gap to just four points between the two sides.

Landboudal worked their way back into the match, and it was not long before they secured another try through captain Tiaan van Wyk. Henco Burger stepped up again, and this time he held his nerve to slot the conversion and hand the visitors a 12-9 lead.

However, Augsburg were not going to allow the visitors to claim another victory in this Classic Clash as they scored a late try, much to the jubilation of the home fans.

The try proved to be the difference at the end of the match as the home side secured a morale boosting 16-12 victory.

Despite being on the wrong end of the result, Landboudal's coach was really pleased with his team performance.

"It was a very hard-hitting match, with both teams not wanting to be on the losing side. But I am proud, Landboudal played good rugby," he stated.

Weston College 26-10 Treverton College

In the other Classic Clash of the weekend, Weston Agricultural College ran in four tries, including a Manelisi Khumalo brace, to claim a comfortable 26-10 victory over Treverton in their long-standing rivalry in Mooi River, KwaZulu-Natal.

Going into the match, Weston were the clear favourites based on their success rate in previous Classic Clashes between the schools.

And this year was no different, as the hosts got the match off to the perfect start with some brilliant attacking rugby.

Weston dominated both possession and territory in the first half and all that dominance paid off as they ran in three first half tries.

Manelisi Khumalo's brace and Ntando Nzuza, along with two successful Ross Tarr conversions took the home side into the half-time interval with a 19-3 lead.

Treverton had Justin Calldecott to thank for their first half points as his pin-point accurate penalty found its mark.

Weston turned the screw on their opponents in the second half which led to Nicolas Bartett adding his name to the try scorers list. Tarr was on target with his third conversion to take his side's score to 26 points.

There was some consolation for Treverton though as they eventually managed to break through Weston's stubborn defence. Jerome Klopper the man to get himself over the line to bring some respectability to the scoreline.

Calldecott stepped up and made no mistake to slot the conversion to take his side's tally into double figures.

This proved to be the final points of the match as Weston claimed another Classic Clashes victory over Treverton.

One man really pleased with his team performance, is the winning captain Kyran Dick.

"It was a tough match and we had to fight hard for the victory, however the pain you feel during the match can't compare to the joy at the end," Dick stated.
