Big scores and upsets on Day one
The first match of the day was a tight contest between the hosts Western Province XV and the Griffons. Despite scoring four successful penalties, a late penalty by the hosts secured them a narrow 13-12 victory over the Griffons.
Griquas edge pass Eastern Province to secure a narrow 13-10 victory while Boland defeated Falcons 34-24.
In an all-blue affair, Blue Bulls registered the biggest score of the day as they cruised to a 62-15 victory against Limpopo Blue Bulls.
Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal and Golden Lions registered big victories against Pumas and Free State.
Namibia and Border CD failed to put their names on the scoreboard, both losing to SWD 0-20 and Zimbabwe 41-0 in one-sided encounters respectively, and Leopards defeated Border 38-11.
In the much anticipated match of the day Boland caused an upset as they posted a surprise 20-12 victory over the hosts and favourites Western Province.
