Bishops slide home against Rondebosch

Match report

Bishops beat Rondebosch 14-12 at Rondebosch on Saturday as the two close neighbours brought the curtain down on the 2005 season.

The field was wet after heavy rains during the week, and the Test was son in Dunedin but it seemed not to dampen the enthusiasm for this great fixture.

As soon as the Test was over, the crowd flooded back to the ground and it was enthusiasm as usual.

Bishops had won well in the earlier part of the season but this time Rondebosch climbed in. They unsettled the Bishops fullback with up-and-unders and, copying the Springboks, they used rush defence and demonic tackling to unsettle Bishops who made more errors and yielded more turn-overs than during the whole of the rest of the season.

But Bishops scored first through a penalty try after Rondebosch had collapsed a maul on their line. Centre Adrian Kritzinger converted.

Soon afterwards Rondebosch scored a splendid try through speedy wing Michael Cowan who was later injured in the match. A try by centre Dean Grey gave the home side a 12-7 lead. Rondebosch were on top.

They stayed on top till the last ten minutes or so when Bishops took over, keeping possession and weaving patterns as they do best. They had a golden chance to score when eighthman Justin Bijl charged down the touch-line and put across a centering kick with numerous Bishops players in attendance. The hooker caught the ball but spilt in the tackle to throw away a golden chance.

From a line-out some 15 metres from the Rondebosch line, Bishops played cleverly close to the tackle/ruck and eventually Dasch Barber scored about five metres in from touch. Adrian Kritzinger, a most successful kicker all season, kept his nerve and kicked the winning kick.

In his speech after the match captain Justin Bijl said what a joy it had been to play against Rondebosch each year from Prep School and up now to their last encounter.
