Boland win slow Interschools

In a Premier Interschools match at Agter-Paarl the home side, Boland Landbou, beat Oakdale of Riversdale 13-6 on Saturday.

The field at the farm was heavy and though the weather was fine both sides kicked and kicked.,. If you had been a photographer at the match wanting pictures or people running with the ball you would have used up precious little film.

The schools sat separately on the stands - Oakdale in their royal blue blazers, Boland Landbou in black. Boland Landbou had special gold bashers for the occasion while Oakdale's were red.

The only score in the first half was a magnificent kick by the Landbou scrumhalf, Jondré Williams, when Oakdale were penalised for a high tackle. The kick was from 41 metres out and five metres in from touch and he goaled it. 3-0 after 8 minutes.

Each side had a chance to score. Oakdale worked an overlap for strong wing JP Coetzee who chipped into in-goal but Luke Philander just beat him to the touchdown.

Boland Landbou came even closer and they attacked down the right. Just in from touch and near the cornerpost wing Seargull van Niekerk was tackled. He rolled over, pushing up, and forward and grounded the ball for the try but the referee penalised him

Just before half-time Boland Landbou suffered what could have been a fatal blow when their flank was sent off for headbutting. The played the second 35 minutes with 14 brave men.

Boland Landbou scored first in the second half. They ran a maul at a line-out at speed into Oakdale territory. Oakdale were penalised and again Williams goaled. 6-0 after 40 minutes.

Philander caught a kick, claimed a mark and stood waiting to take the kick, but a Boland Landbou player had touched the ball after the kick and so the mark was not allowed. Oakdale did not stop playing but drove Philander back into his in-goal, thus conceding a five-metre scrum. Astonishingly Boland Landbou won a tighthead and cleared.

In this half any running with the ball - rare though it was - was by Oakdale. They made progress into the Boland Landbou 22 and then Armand Heunis, an excellent flank, picked up at the back of a tackle/ruck, beat one defender and bounced off another to score a brilliant try with two Landbouers hanging on him. Maurice white converted and Oakdale led 7-6. after 47 minutes.

The lead was of two minutes' duration. Landbou kicked off and Oakdale kicked long to the open side. Philander caught the ball a few metres outside of his 22 and counterattacked  with elusive brilliance. He beat defenders and then gave to JT Potgieter who was free on his outside and the big centre strode through for a try which Williams converted. 13-7 - the winning score.

The game went slowly along for the last 212 minutes till the final whistle  signalled gleeful hugging for the home side whose supporters ran onto the field to join in the gleeful hugging. They formed a huge circle around their heroes who stood on the middle. They then sang the school song while a Oakdale group stood to one side, in a disconsolate little circle,  heads drooping.
