Brackenfell entertain at the Stoops
The tournament ran from Saturday, April 1 to Wednesday, April 5.
The first tournament was held at Hoërskool President in 2008, which comprised of just of eight teams. Over the years the tournament's popularity has grown and in 2012 there were 42 participating schools.
The 2016 addition held at Hoërskool Tygerberg saw 36 teams in attendance.
The festival is aimed primarily at sides below the top tier in the Western Province plus anybody else, who seem to be mostly Bolanders, who wants to pitch in.
This year, Brackenfell played host to 33 schools over a period of three days.
The tournament delivered exhilarating flowing rugby that delighted the appreciative crowd.
On day one there were some eye-openers especially Porterville’s 25-10 win against locals De Kuilen.
Malmesbury’s Schoonspruit, under veteran coach Vos de Jager, recorded an excellent 38-19 result against Humansdorp Secondary, with young flyhalf Alberto Damon turning on the charm once again. While Groenberg gave Aliwal North a 38-17 lesson.
After recording big wins on day one, Brackenfell, Tygerberg and Nico Malan all maintained their winning form on Day two. However, the most riveting performances came from some of the largely unheralded Boland schools.
Although Schoonspruit thrashed Robertson 37-14 and Paulus Joubert crushed Knysna 43-15, it was Grabouw’s Groenberg who produced the result of the day by beating Worcester Gym 18-14.
Vredenburg showed signs of a long-overdue resurgence by recording their second straight win, beating Langenhoven High 22-7, while tiny Lutzville were good value for their 20-10 win over Alexander Road.
On Day three, Paulus Joubert made sure their record a whitewash with a narrow 14-13 win against Humansdorp Secondary, while Klein Nederburg made sure their end the tournament on a high note with 24-10 over Emil Weder.
