Brandwag win thriller

At Graeme College's Rugby Day, Hoërskool Die Brandwag of Uitenhage outscored their opponents, Queen’s College from Queenstown by two tries to one to win a tough rugby encounter between the two schools’ 1st  XV’s. by just two points  

The match started off with Brandwag quickly accumulating six points via two penalty goals by their flyhalf, Malcolm Jaer.  Queen’s slowly but surely fought their way back with an excellent drop goal and two penalties slotted by their flyhalf.  This meant that Queen’s led 9-6 at the half-time break.

Both teams attacked vigorously and, apart from early season handling mistakes (not too many), both displayed stern defence to keep the attackers at bay.   

Early in the second half Queen’s pulled further ahead with yet another penalty slotted by their flyhalf.  Brandwag then launched an attack from play close to the Queenian’s try-line which resulted in the first try of the match being scored by Brandwag’s burly tight head prop, Erich de Jager.  The conversion was missed and Queen’s led by 12-11.  

Excellent backline play gave Queen’s their first try by their pacy right wing.  The try was converted and Queen’s led by 19-12.  

Brandwag drew closer with yet another penalty by Malcolm Jaer (number 10) to make the score 19 -14 to Queen’s with four or five minutes to full time.  Brandwag then displayed some slick handling by their backs to send Malcolm Jaer over the try line to score the best try of the match under the posts.  He also converted to take the score to the 21-19 winning score.  

Die Brandwag deserved the hard fought win.
