Captain’s profile: Jason Vers

Senior players may be exiting Port Elizabeth, but Union High captain Jason Vers is eyeing a bright future at the Kings.

The multi-skilled flyhalf has signed a contract with the Kings and will join them next year.

A star of the future, Vers played Craven Week rugby for the last two years, first team rugby for the past three seasons and Grant Khomo rugby in 2011.

“It was a special experience and one of the proudest moments in my life,” he said of representing his province.

“Probably the highlight of my schoolboy career was when I received my man of the match award at this year’s Craven Week.”

Vers feels his dedication is fundamental to his success and gives him an edge over most players who share his goal of making it big.

“When they are sleeping, I’m working. When they are eating, I’m working, because to win you have to train and to win you must never give up,” said Vers.

A good example to his teammates and able to keep a cool head in stressful situations, Vers says it’s with great pride that he captains Union High and is relishing Saturday’s blockbuster against Volkskool.

“I am very proud to be bestowed this honour [the captaincy]. The season has been a good one and off the field. The team for Saturday is a strong team, it has lots of experience and there are a few young players but I know they have what it takes.”
