Captain's profile: JP Davoren

Cambridge captain JP Davoren will look to lead from the front in Saturday’s FNB Classic Clash against Hudson Park.

Davoren, a workmanlike flank, believes in setting an example his teammates can follow, and that they have.

Davoren has inspired his team to victories over St. Andrew’s College and Graeme College as well as a 10-10 draw with Selborne College in what has been a successful season for Cambridge.

Injuries have hampered Cambridge throughout the season, but for the first time this term, they will have a full squad available for selection. Davoren believes the experience the players have gained this year will stand them in good stead.

“As always, we expect a very tightly contested match,” says Davoren. “Particularly if one looks at our encounter in April of this year where we went down by a narrow two points [14-12].

“All the encounters over the years have generally been very keenly contested. Hudson like to play a more open game with their backline particularly well-skilled. We will counter that with a strong pack and a tight defensive system.”

Davoren adds that his charges will be highly motivated to end the season on a high this weekend.

“We must focus on what we do well and the structures that we have put into place through the course of the season.

“Our motivation is that this is the biggest game of the season for us, with many of us playing our last match in the black jersey of Cambridge. We will be giving of our best right to the final whistle.”
