Captain's profile: Pumezo Kanzi

This season (2016) has been really good to Kanzi, as the flank represented Border Country District's Under-18 Craven Week team at Kearsney College and received the title of first XV captain.

"Representing Border CD at the Craven Week was a fantastic experience. Playing rugby at such a high level and meeting people from different walks of life has not only helped me grow as a player but as a person too.

"I believe in being a good person before being a good rugby player or captain. It’s about character, morals and respect.

"I feel highly privileged to captain the Cambridge first XV because very few people get the opportunity. Cambridge has a long history of prestige and success in every facet of life. To be part of that legacy is an honour," Kanzi said.

Cambridge have had an average season thus far, which includes a defeat against Hudson Park earlier in the season.

"We have not had the best of seasons. We’ve had a mixed bag of results. We have had some good victories, lost some games that we should have won and some poor performances, to say the least. However, we will look to end the season on a high.

"We played against Hudson Park in the beginning of the season, we dominated territory and possession for large parts of the game but did not take our scoring opportunities and ended up losing the match by nine points. I really expect a tough and competitive match. We expect them to play for territorial position and utilise the rolling maul a lot.

"However, I want to encourage the team not to focus on the past. The past is the past. There is nothing we can do about those games. We must just focus on this weekend’s game, believe and play for one another.

"Saturday's side has a good balance of experienced players and players playing their first season in the first XV.  Being the end of the season the younger players have played enough games to be comfortable playing at this level. There are no injuries so we will be playing with our best possible team, " he added.

The hardworking matriculants' future plans are to study geography and environmental management while continuing playing rugby at University and provincial level.
