Captain's profile: SJ van Vuuren

Brandwag captain Stephan Janse van Vuuren says that it is not only an honour, but also a huge responsibility when he leads his side onto the field in their crunch Classic Clash match against Daniel Pienaar in Uitenhage.

Van Vuuren has represented his school's first team 43 times and plays in the No.8 position for his side.

"I always try to lead by example, and not just words. I can’t expect the team to give 100% all of the time, if I’m not.

"As a captain I allow other players to have input in decisions, but ultimately I feel my decision-making as a captain and player under pressure are my strengths. With that I take great pride in my line-out play.

The 93kg, 1.93m forward was part of Eastern Province's undefeated 2014 Craven Week side and was an experience he described as amazing.

Van Vuuren has been involved in a Classic Clash with Daniel Pienaar before and knows what to expect from their rivals on match day.

"They always come with a bang.  They are a good side with a lot of key players both in the forwards and the backs," he said.

Brandwag have not had the best of seasons with only five wins out of ten heading into Saturday's encounter. Van Vuuren's message to his team this week was one that would have surely put his teammates into a good space.

"I want them to stay calm and enjoy the experience.  I also told them to prepare as best they could for whatever the situation might be on Saturday," he added.

Van Vuuren is planning on studying Commerce at the University of Stellenbosch. If the chance arises he also wants to Varsity Cup in the future.
