DHS beat Glenwood in Durban derby
Match Report
DHS beat Glenwood 28-21 in a close encounter in Durban on Saturday. DHS won the 1st XV match, but Glenwood dominated most of the other matches.
The following report comes from DHS:
After a disappointing morning’s rugby, where our junior teams were blown away by the bigger and stronger opposition at Glenwood, the afternoon’s games provided a different story.
In front of a passionate and exuberant crowd, the first XV turned in a tremendous display against the highly fancied Glenwood outfit. Our younger side matched the formidable Green Machine in the tense first half, and then turned up the heat in the second to run out 28-21 winners. The game was a tremendous battle, with no quarter asked for or given. The young school backline in particular showed their mettle, making good use of the quality ball provided by the hardworking pack.
It was never going to be easy, but the players were focussed and did the job well.
Glenwood took an early lead through a penalty by Ian Adendorff, but it was soon equalised by Ryan Matthysen, who had a faultless day. The scores were close at the break, but after half-time, Dylan Jones broke the deadlock, after Max Tripepi charged an attempted kick-down, which he re-gathered and passed to Jones, who scored under the poles. Ryan Matthysen converted.
Although the game was close, it needed a double score by Glenwood to take the victory away from a committed DHS 1st XV. Every DHS player was so committed that it is hard to single out any, but Ryan Matthysen's kicking display deserves special mention. It was a flawless display with 7 out of 7 attempts (six penalties and one conversion) ... some of them beyond his own half-way line!
It was a great team effort and DHS certainly deserved the victory of 28-21.
