DHS waste chances

DHS took on Kearsney at Van Heerdens at 12.00 on Saturday.

Kearsney took the early lead when their flank burst through the DHS backline untouched for a converted try. Soon after that they extended their lead with a penalty to lead 10 – 0.

Ryan Matthysen uncharacteristically missed two kickable penalties that could have brought DHS into the game.

Just before the break Kearsney extended their lead further with a further penalty to take the score to 13 - 0. Ryan Matthysen replied with a penalty to take the score to 13-3 at the break.

The first half was a very individualistic performance by DHS, where the players had opportunities to put Kearsney under pressure but selfishly held on to the ball.

The second half saw DHS concede a converted try early on to take the score to 20-3.Then the DHS resurgence began. The DHS players threw caution to the wind and threw the ball around. Wessel Potgieter, Winston Cameron-Dow and Brady Barends were exceptional in the second half.

After good interplay by the backs and forwards Msissi Buthelezi rounded off a good passage of play with a try in the corner for Ryan Matthysen to convert to take the score to 20-10, with 15 minutes to go.

DHS mounted attack after attack and Luzuko Vulindlu rounded the Kearsney defense with a try under the poles for DHS to come within three points of Kearsney after Ryan Matthysen converted the try.

DHS’s hope of victory was seriously dashed after Wessel Potgieter went on one of his bullocking runs and in his attempt to pass the ball he was tackled from behind and he knocked the ball on five metres from the line. The try could have put DHS ahead by two points with the conversion to come.

DHS conceded a further penalty to give Kearsney a 23-17 lead. DHS went straight back on attack and put Kearsney under huge pressure with minutes to go.  The Kearsney fly half rounded off a good personal performance with a drop goal to the final score to 26-17.

It certainly was a game that could have gone either way and DHS will rue the fact they did not make use of their opportunities.
