FNB Classic Clash - Wynberg vs SACS

Match Preview

The two oldest schools in South Africa meet on the rugby field on Saturday when Wynberg Boys' High host the South African College School (SACS) in a FNB Classic Clash. The match will be televised live on Supersport 1 and MNET (kick-off: 12.25)

As usual the teams are very evenly matched and it promises to be a close-fought affair. The teams, for the most part, play largely the same opposition. Both teams struggled against Paul Roos, Paarl Gim and Bishops. SACS have had the better results overall though and ran Boland Landbou close while beating Paarl Boys' High and the highly rated Strand team.

SACS have a young team with a mobile pack who will be looking to free up as much quick, clean ball for their exciting backs as possible. Their strength lies in their backs and in left-wing Dean Holland, who has scored 16 league tries this season, SACS have a potential match winner.

Wynberg have no notable wins to their credit but critically did beat SACS the first time they met this season, at SACS. Their big abrasive skipper Grant Kemp, who captains the team from tighthead prop, epitomises what they are about. They love the physical encounters and are arguably the team more suited to demands of a tight Interschools fixture. Wynberg will be looking to dominate SACS up front and will hope to cut off their supply of ball at source. In Stefan Swanich they have a more than useful goal-kicker who will punish any opposition indiscretions.

SACS will be hoping their backs regain the rhythm that saw them rip Strand to shreds a few weeks ago, while Wynberg will be hoping their pack can summon their remaining reserves of strength to power them to a vital derby win.

As Wynberg captain Grant Kemp acknowledged; there is not much between the teams and it will come down to who is hungrier on the day. It promises to be a classic!
