Glenwood power past Westville
The game promised to be a tough affair for both teams, with the day’s results being very tight leading up to the 1st XV match.
Westville got the match underway and put the Green Machine under a lot of pressure in the opening minutes of the match. Glenwood’s defence held strong not allowing Westville through.
As they soaked up the pressure Glenwood’s confidence grew with time as they began to find holes in the Westville defence. Westville, however, had opportunities to take the lead but wayward kicking off the tee cost them valuable points.
Glenwood capitalised on Westville’s mistakes and lock forward JJ van der Mescht went over in the corner to open Glenwood’s account, the conversion was a good one by Morné van Rensburg, Glenwood 7-0 up. Only a few minutes later great attacking play by Glenwood led Siyanda Cele over the whitewash, 12-0 to Glenwood.
Westville fought back but could not break through Glenwood’s defence. Great skill by right winger Morné van Rensburg to grubber the ball through as it sat up for the chasing scrumhalf of Glenwood Jaden Hendrikse as he went over. The conversion was a good one as Glenwood’s lead grew to 19-0 as that play took the game to half-time.
Glenwood got the second half under way and started the way they finished the first half, with a try from their big prop forward Jordan Clarke. The conversion was successful. 26-0 to Glenwood.
Glenwood then had a set back and were reduced to 14 men when flank Runako Brynard was yellow carded for foul play close to Glenwood’s try line. Westville capitalised on that with their first points and they went over with the conversion being a good one. The score was still in Glenwood’s favour 26-7.
Flyhalf and playmaker Dylan Pretorius went over for a try of his own with the conversion being unsuccessful. 31-7 to Glenwood.
Westville retaliated straight after the kick-off with a try. 31-12 to Glenwood.
Glenwood had the last say in the game as lock forward Lunga Ncube went over in the corner with the last play of the game and the conversion was successful. Final score was 38-12 to Glenwood.
