Grey win in East London

Grey PE produced a determined fight back in the last three minutes to beat Selborne 28-22 in their FNB Classic Clash in East London on Thursday.

Selborne haven’t had their best season, but heading into the closing stages they had set up the platform for an upset as they led 22-18 after what looked like the match-winning try through scrumhalf Onke Nyaku. But Grey remained composed, and with six minutes remaining they chose to kick for touch and set up a lineout drive.

The tactic had worked well for them earlier as they scored their second try from a maul, but Selborne withstood the initial onslaught. But they did give away a penalty, and from the second drive, the referee adjudged that Selborne flank Matthew Hansen came in from the side and he was yellow carded. It proved third time lucky for Grey as the Selborne pack couldn’t handle the pressure with one man short and Grey drove over, with flank Bathandwa Cafu emerging with the ball and clutching the badge on his chest to show what the win means for Grey – they hadn’t beaten Selborne in the last three encounters.

Replacement flyhalf Grant Miskin nailed the conversion from the corner to take a 25-22 lead. Selborne still had a chance, just as in the last couple of weekends against Queen’s and Dale when they had led into the closing stages. But from the resulting kick-off, the ball didn’t go 10m. From the scrum, Grey won a penalty, and Miskin again showed his temperament with a long-range penalty as the final whistle went.

Earlier, Grey took an early lead through an Alex Banfield penalty, but Selborne struck back with a try from centre Dylan Pietersen – who hit a nice line in his first start. But unforced errors continued to mar Selborne’s performance – from the kick-off Grey flank Hanre Barnard charged down the clearing kick to score and hand his side the ascendancy.

The entertaining match continued to sway as the lead often changed hands, and Selborne captain Andrew Miles showed good pace to beat the cover defence as his side went 12-10 up. However, Grey went into half-time 15-12 ahead as their well-constructed maul saw captain Lloyd Parker flop over the line.

The sides traded penalties in the second half, but Grey had most of the possession, with Selborne’s defence being tested, although there was no faulting their commitment. With nine minutes to go and trailing 18-15, Selborne opted to run from deep and a well-worked backline move saw Nyaku take an inside pass that gave them the lead.

But another Selborne mistake from the kick-off saw Grey exerting all the pressure in the closing stages to claim the win.
