Horseflies host Grasshoppers

This year it is a Classic Clash.

Moreover this year is DHS's 150th birthday, Durban's oldest school. How they would love to celebrate with win, swatting the Grasshoppers?

Grasshoppers? Glenwood had a plague of them many, many years ago. Horseflies? The posh of the Berea had stables. Stables have horses and horses have stinging horseflies. This week the Horseflies would hope to sting.

Of matches between the 1st XVs of the two schools since 1922, DHS still have the lead - 68-55 with 11 draws. But in recent years Glenwood have dominated. In fact DHS have not won since 2006. It would be great if we could get a complete list of results between the two schools. We have placed some recent results below.

Season so Far

Glenwood had a more glamorous season so far including their great, successful expedition to Japan where they won the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament, played in Fukuoka, the second time Glenwood have won it on three visits.

In South Africa they have won all eight of their matches, including beating other schools in the FNB Top 20 - Dr EG Jansen, HTS Middelburg and Dale.

DHS have played eight matches, winning five. None of their matches would have been against teams in the Top 20.

At present Glenwood are ranked fifth in the Top 20. DHS are not ranked.

Results against Common Opponents

Noteworthy Players

There are certainly players to watch.

Craven Week 2016

DHS have five players in the KwaZulu Natal Craven Week team, announced just recently - fullback Cham Zondeki, wing Tonderai Ndudzo, centre Onke Jiba, scrumhalf Sanele Nohamba and flank Phendulani Buthelezi.

Glenwood have eight players in the team against DHS - centre Mayibongwe  Maduna, wing GJ Lubbe, flyhalf Martin Holtzhausen, flanks Austin Brummer and Jonothan O'Neill, lock JJ van Der Mescht and both props, Renier van Rooyen and Quinton Voster. (Durandt  Weiderman is not down to play.) In addition Marco Calvie was at last year's Craven Week and was chosen eighthman for South African Schools A team.

Academy Week

DHS: flank Sibusiso Mkhaliphi, lock Ryan Dafel and flyhalf Gert Coetzee

Glenwood: fullback 15 Dylan Kruger, centre JC Conradie, scrumhalf Craig Hunt, lock  Matthew Bauer, hooker Bredon Schwulst and forward Lindokuhle Cele.

Of the other players in the two sides four represented KwaZulu Natal at the 2015 Grant Khomo Week - Tonderai Ndudzo and Kamvelihle Fatyela of DHS and Etienne Terblanché and Morné van Rensburg of Glenwood.

The matches will be split this time. Friday's matches will be at Glenwood, Saturday's on the DHS fields. (The times and venues are below) The names of the fields are interesting. Izak van Heerden, one of South Africa's most revered coaches who coached the Under-15 at DHS, and Sas Nourse were contemporaries on the DHS staff. Nourse coached the DHS 1st XV when Koos Basson coached the Glenwood side, the latter's name remembered on one of the Glenwood fields.
