Interschools!
It is the first week of August. That means that the Interschools will break out in Paarl - not an interschools THE Interschools, the original one, the prototype, the biggest in the world - Galpil vs Bloedwors, Paarl Boys' High vs Paarl Gimnasium at Faure Street.
There is nothing like it. The whole of the lovely Boland town knows it's on and is involved. Nobody in Paarl will be neutral about it. You are either Blue for Boys' High or green for Gimmies. It is a town divided.
Celebrations before and after are divided. The ground is divided - green on the left and blue on the right. On the left your programme will be green, on the right blue.
The ground will be packed with passionate people. And mercifully it seems that there will not be a repeat of last weekend's ghastly weather.
There are lots of activities which last the whole week, but the climax will be the rugby match which will, again, be broadcast live on television. Win that match and you are the kings of schools rugby, regardless of what happens anywhere else.
Going to interschools is not like going to any other rugby match. This is an experience.
In the Cape there used to be the Intervarsity - Cape Town vs Stellenbosch, Ikeys vs Maties. It still happens but not with the trimmings and enthusiasm of pre 1970s. The Interschools has taken its place.
Next year Interschools will be a hundred years old. Usually it has been a close affair, but this century Gimmies have had the upper hand. Of the 13 matches this century, they have won nine, drawn won and lost three.
This year may well be the year that Boys' High change that, but for heaven's sake do not bet on it. If you do and get it wrong you will never forget.
Last year there was an outstanding rugby player playing for Paul Roos. His name it seemed was never mentioned without reference to his father, Bradley Worral, who intercepted a pass and raced away to score the winning try in 1982 when Gimmies were favourites to win.
And when the game is over and all go whom to celebrate or mope, that's it. It won't happen for another year. In fact neither school will play rugby the week after it as they recover, try to get some equilibrium.
Season so Far
This year Boys' High have played in many places, including Japan where they were the losers in the final of the Sanix tournament . In South Africa they have played 16 matches, won 13, drawn one and lost two.
Gimmies have played 13 matches, won nine and lost four.
On the FNB Top 20 Boys' High are ranked seventh, Gim 17th.
