Kearsney wins nailbiter

In what will go down as one of the best games of the 2013 KwaZulu-Natal school rugby season, home team Kearsney College once again relied on a late try to seal victory against Glenwood, winning 26-25 and making it a second win in a row against Glenwood.

Although Kearsney dominated the first half in terms of territory and possession, they had only a 13-10 lead at the break to show for all their efforts.

Glenwood fought back strongly in a more evenly contested second half. Their ability to make something out of nothing served them well. Glenwood took the lead for the first time in the match at 22-21 midway through the second half. The visitors then kicked over another penalty to go 25-21 ahead with just a few minutes left on the clock.

Kearsney remained composed and from the very next kickoff, the home team won a turnover and quickly advanced up field where they pressed hard and were finally rewarded with the match-winning try scored in the left-hand corner.

It was a thrilling finish to a highly entertaining game.

Although Kearsney went into the match without their two SA Schools players and it was their teamwork that once again won the day, the game was not without individual heroes. The outstanding player of the match was Kearsney’s fullback Christopher Lines who had made numerous impressive runs and evaded many firs- time tackles in the process. Kearsney hooker Jordan Meaker also delivered an excellent performance, as did technically sound centre Tyler Smith.
