Kingswood Win K-Day in Fine Style

A capacity crowd of 10 000 were treated to a great game of schoolboy rugby.

The game got off to a flying start, with the visitors drawing first blood through a try from Ross Ferguson three minutes in. Centre Matt Moore made no mistake in converting. St Andrew's 7-KC 0

Kingswood hit back immediately as fullback Athi Halom put through a clever grubber for centre Siba Mzanywa to gather before showing his pace to outstrip the opposition to score a well worked try under the posts. Hayden Potgieter converted to level the scores at 7-7.

In the 22nd minute Kingswood lock Lubambo Sibam crashed over after sustained pressure on the St Andrew's try line to put the hosts ahead. Potgieter failed to convert giving Kingswood a 12-7 lead.

Five minutes later, Moore nailed a penalty to put St Andrew's within touching distance. However, Kingswood once again wasted no time responding, with lock forward Sibam scoring his second try of the game. Potgieter added the extra two points increasing Kingswood’s lead to 19-10.

On the stroke of half-time burly Kingswood wing Matthew Takeloo burst through two attempted tackles to run 25 m before crossing the tryline to score a sensational try. Potgieter converted once more to extend the lead to a comfortable 26-10.

Moore had a chance to narrow the gap on the stroke of half-time, but his penalty kick from 40 metres out went wide. Kingswood went into the break with a 26-10 advantage.

The second began as a tough arm-wrestle, although the power and explosiveness of Kingswood's forward pack was now beginning to take its toll on the St Andrew's forwards. After sustained pressure Kingswood were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute which was slotted by Potgieter to take the lead to 29-10.

St Andrew's put the Kingswood defense under sustained pressure for the next 10 minutes, but failed to break through.

However, Kingswood soon broke this stranglehold through a fine break by lock Shane Wewege who had a storming game for Kingswood. He was brought to ground on the St Andrew's 22m line but managed to off-load to the backline. Slick handling saw the ball reaching speedy fullback Athi Halom who mesmerised the defence with a fine run to score in the corner. The conversion failed but Kingswood were now holding an unassailable lead of 34-10.

With the outcome of the match virtually sealed Kingswood rolled on all seven of their substitutes. St Andrew's fullback Ferguson, hit back with his second try of the game. Ferguson tried his hand at converting the try, but was unsuccessful. KC 34-St Andrew's 15.

As the clock ticked down, St Andrew's prop and captain Sazi Sandi scored a consolation try. Moore returned to kicking duties and converted. KC 34-St Andrew's 22

Kingswood College kept their K-Day crown with a fine 34-22 win.
