Maritzburg College beat Pionier at Voortrekker Festival

College carry on well

After two pleasing wins on a mini-tour to Pretoria, 29-15 against John Vorster and 20-16 against Menlo Park, College played their first match of the season in Pietermaritzburg, at the Voortrekker Festival, now in its fifteenth year, and beat Pionier of Vryheid 24-0.

Although not a top-rank rugby school, Pionier have a growing reputation and the result was not a foregone conclusion.

In the event, College, without often slipping into top gear, cruised to a comfortable victory. The forwards were simply too good for Pionier in every respect and won plenty of good ball. The backs, not yet as organised as they will surely become, found the going a little harder.

Pionier defended manfully and did not go down without a fight. They managed to pressurise College into frequent error, though they seldom threatened the College line.

Two tries were recorded in each half, all following good work by the forwards. There was clearly still a lot of work to be done by College, but the signs were promising.
