Monnas are the Champions!

Beeld Trophy final

Monument won the Beeld Trophy for the very first time when they beat Waterkloof 30-17 in Pretoria on Saturday.

They deserved their large victory, scoring four tries to three.

Monnas hit the match running but it was Klofies who scored first when he went over for a try against the run of play. Back came Monnas with thrilling movements that resulted ion two quick tries, one by big right-wing Ghaliel Markus and the other by energetic flank Johan Janse van Rensburg after clever running by centres Derich Badendhorst and Warren van Rooyen who was a late inclusion in the side after hurting his ankle early inn the semi-final against HTS Middelburg. The two tries, both converted by prolific goalkicker Christiaan van den Berg, gave Monnas a 14-5 lead.

At this stage the star turn was Byron Godfrey at fullback who started counterattack after counterattack.

Try No.3 was scored by outstanding flank Johan van Deventer after a strong run.

Just when it seemed that Monnas would run away with the match Klofies' fullback Louis Roos beat two defenders on the touch-line to score.

Christiaan van den Berg opened the scoring in the second half with two penalty goals of more than 40 metres. Van den Berg then robbed the Klofies of the ball at the scrum to send Ghaliel Markus over for his second try. That made the score 30-12, and the result was inevitable.

But Klofies had the last word when hooker Charl Nel scored from a rolling maul.

Outstanding for Monnas were flank Johan van Deventer, right-wing Ghaliel Markus who scored two tries and fullback Byron Godfrey. For Klofies the flanks Pieter Meyer and Geo Botha were outstanding.
