Outeniqua Captain – Jaco Colyn

Player Profile

Oudtshoorn are about to come down over the Outeniqua Pass to George to play Outeniqua in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday, Kwaggas against Struisies. Scrumhalf Jaco Colyn captains Outeniqua.

Kwaggas captain Jaco Colyn may be small in stature but as captain of the powerhouse “span” in the Southern Cape he has developed broad shoulders.

Born in Warrington (Northern Cape) on the 6 January 1987 Jaco attended Wes-Laerskool in Oudtshoorn. Jaco was quick to point out that he did not just go to Outeniqua High for the rugby but for the all-round education it offers. He has clearly embraced all that the school has to offer, as he is Vice-Headboy of the school and Head of the Hostel.

Apart from his leadership, coach Piet Cloete says that it Jaco's ability to read the game and execute the correct options are what sets him apart. Jaco has numerous rugby idols but currently looks up to Bok No. 9 Fourie du Preez. Du Preez’s precise tactical kicking ability are what Jaco aspires to.

Jaco is in his second year in the Outeniqua 1st XV and despite having played Craven Week this year he cites their 2004 Media 24 Trophy win as the highlight of his rugby career. The final against Dr EG Jansen of Boksburg was obviously a great occasion but the quarter-final win against Paarl Gym (8-5) at a packed Outeniqua Stadium stands out especially for him.

Jaco is looking forward to the inter-schools game against Oudtshoorn this weekend. The Kwaggas are outright favourites but Oudtshoorn always play above themselves in the derby and it is bound to be a close game. Jaco hopes his forwards will once again dominate as they have all opposition in the Southern Cape thus far this year. If they are able to, the Kwaggas will be able to entertain the crowd with the high tempo total rugby they love to play.

Jaco will studying physiotherapy at Free State University in 2006 and no doubt his rugby will thrive in Bloemfontein like so many before him.
