Paul Roos in Bloemfontein
The competition between the two schools is of the most wholesome kind. Each year this massive coming together of Stellenbosch and Bloemfontein comes at the end of the season as a climax of sorts. It is just a pity that South African Schools matches abstract some of the stars from the match - this year two from Paul Roos, one of whom is Damian Willemse, very much the team's general, and five from Grey. Still the match will be as keenly contested as ever.
There is more than just the rugby, though that involves 25 teams going up from the land of vineyards and sea to the Highveld. There is also hockey, soccer, golf, tennis, tabletennis, chess, waterpolo, mountainbiking, squash and debating in Afrikaans and English.
Of course the 1st XV matters most but look at the results down the years - the scores are mostly close.
The migration is massive - as are the logistics for such an exercise. No wonder the boys and Old Boys of these dedicated schools do so well.
Paul Roos has roughly 1 200 pupils and about 80% of those will be going up in buses to Grey, the last leaving in the early house of Friday morning. 80% of 1 200 = 960!
The match will be televised live (14.00) on Supersport channel 210.
