Potch Boys' High play Potch Gim

Match report

In one of two Potchefstroom derbies last Saturday, Gimnasium won 19-14 against Boys' high which Boys' High insiders call College. There was unpleasantness on the Mooi.

The following report is from Boys' High:

The College Gymnasium match was a very exciting affair with Gymnasium winning 19-14. The match produced some exciting rugby with both sides prepared to spread it wide whenever possible. For College Junior Tafa scored with the rest of the points coming from the boot of Calvin Van Rensburg who kicked over three penalties.

This brings to an end a very exciting and successful season for College. What has been most exciting is the number of black players coming through and the style of rugby they are able to play. Encouraging for College is that their under 16A and 15A lost only three matches each and College's under 15A side managed to beat all the Potch Schools - Gimmies, Volkies and HTS.

The day was marred by racist comments from Gymnasium parents and players. In future the school will have to look at separating the two groups of supporters and ensuring that all spectators sit during rugby matches. We appreciate the fact that  it is difficult to control parents, and coming from a very inclusive Afrikaans environment to a rugby match were the majority of people are black, and traditionally College rugby has always been very physical, must be a shock. However it is unacceptable to have boys playing rugby and being called all sorts of things by parents on the side of the field and the players on the field.

We, however, must not throw stones from glass houses, and we need to ensure that our supporters don't get involved in this sort nonsense. At most games we have had over 100 young Old Boys, and we are going to have an incident (schoolboy rugby in Potch has been marred by fights on the side of the fields this season), especially if parents are making racist remarks and half of the Old Boys are black. I will forward this to the chairperson of the Old Boys' Society and the Parents' Association, but we need to look at a Code of Conduct for Parents and Old Boys when supporting at rugby matches
