Queen’s go down to Dale
In a highly anticipated match, two of the Borders’ archrivals met at Queen’s College. The conditions at the Recreation Grounds were perfect for running rugby.
The hosts started the match like a house on fire and Justin Kuyler opened the scoring for Queen’s in the second minute, which was converted by Albré Wagener. After the restart it was once again the hosts who were on the front foot and after the some patient phase play scored their second try of the match for a 12-0 lead.
Dale managed to gain possession after the opening few minutes and Courtney Winnaar was successful with a penalty for the visitors. Dale was the next team to score and controlled the rest of play for the first half after some poor defence and inaccurate kicking. The first try came for the visitors after a poor midfield kick which saw the Dale fullback go on a jinxing run and dot down next to the posts, which was converted by Winnaar. Queen’s failed to learn from their earlier mistake and another poor kick was punished when Winnaar dotted down for the visitors’ second try, which he converted. The third try for the visitors was scored by the Dale wing after some good phase play by the visitors. Winnaar was successful with the conversion and Dale enjoyed a 24-12 lead at half-time.
The second half, whilst a low scoring affair, was a keenly contested half between both teams who threw everything into attack and defence. Dale was first to open their accounts with an unconverted try in the corner and they enjoyed a 29-12 lead. The Queenians managed to produce a good passage of play just before the final whistle to score a converted try. Queen’s lost the game to Dale 19-29.
Queen’s will rue the fact that that their tactical kicking on the day, was of poor quality, and that they lacked the necessary accuracy to win such a tough encounter, but in true Queenian spirit the boys will put the game behind them and look forward to their next game which is on Friday 24 March against Welkom Gimnasium at the Recreation Grounds.
