Rare win for Graeme

Match Report

On Saturday Graeme College beat Kingswood for the first time since 1996.  Played in damp and cold conditions, the game was not the biggest spectacle, and was thus a low scoring affair, the final score 14-7.

Graeme took an early lead from a penalty by captain and flyhalf Lorenzo Southey.  Kingswood replied 15 minutes into the game with a try from flyhalf Ryan van Niekerk - who broke blindside from a scrum and beat three defenders to score.

Graeme eighthman Roscoe Dredge scored a try that gave Graeme the lead going into the break.  The score remained 8-7 for most of the second half, until Kingswood had a penalty in front of the poles.  Fullback Christopher Juries instead took a quick tap and was brought down just short of the line by the Graeme cover defence.

Graeme won a penalty and moved into Kingswood territory, where they pressurised for the rest of the match and Southey kicked one penalty and a drop kick to take Graeme out of reach.

The final whistle was greeted with jubilation from the Graeme players, who last experienced a Graeme 1st XV beat their Grahamstown rivals when most of the boys were in Grade 2.
