SAC beat SACS
In a game that never reached the heights it might have at the Graeme Rugby Day, the St Andrew’s College 1st XV still managed to run out comfortable 27-13 winners against SACS from Cape Town on Saturday.
It was SACS that scored first after soaking up much territorial pressure which had been exerted by the St Andrew’s side. A break-out down the left saw them score out wide and take a 5-0 lead.
St Andrew’s put unnecessary pressure on themselves by losing first phase ball. It took an intercept from right wing Stewart Smith to open the scoring for the Grahamstown side, with the conversion from Connor Stulich seeing St Andrew’s 7-5 in front.
A penalty soon after by SACS saw them regain the lead until Dylan Wilson crashed over for St Andrew’s after a good passage of play. Stulich converted and the lead stayed at 14-8 until half time.
A moment of brilliance from Andrew Coxwell, in his first touch of the game kept the pressure on the SACS XV as he scored an eighty-metre try after a well worked set play move. This pushed St Andrew’s 19-8 in front. A further try to replacement scrumhalf Sinjin Broad pushed St Andrew’s further out before SACS came back to narrow the gap on the scoreboard.
It was St Andrew’s who rounded off the scoring with a penalty by Stulich out in front of the posts, leaving the final score at 27-13, a result that St Andrew’s will be pleased with despite its not being their most convincing performance.
