School Festivals 2013
Don't you admire the enthusiasm of South Africa's rugby teachers? Here we are gearing up for end-of-year exams and they are in an advanced stage of preparing next year's Festivals.
In 2013 there is a problem of too few long weekends for rugby festivals, which is unusual. Next year the movable feast of Easter is on 31 March. It is the only long weekend falling in holidays common to all South African schools.
The shortage of suitable long weekends has meant that Wynberg has been forced to cancel its festival next year.
Grey High School of Port Elizabeth will not be holding their usual festival next year because of the Maritzburg 150th. But they will resume in 2014.
The Skonk Rugby Festival, part of Maritzburg's 150th celebrations lasts from 29 March to 3 April. The celebratory match is Maritzburg vs Glenwood on 25 May 2013.
This year will be St Stithians' 30th Festival. It started them all.
There are others, e.g. the Krugersdorp High Festival, who will be holding their 10th tournament, the Independent Schools Weeks for 1st XVs, Under-16s, Under-15s and Under-14s, and Cape Schools Week
There is also an Under-16 festival at Paarl Gim and an Under-15 festival at Paarl Boys' High. And there may well be others.
